NATF – Introduction to Rehabilitation and Captive Management of Injured and Orphaned Birds

The Introduction to Captive Management and Rehabilitation of Injured (Saturday) and Hand Rearing and Rehabilitation of Orphaned Birds (Sunday)

This first day will cover:

  • Safety & Handling Considerations;
  • Identification, Legal Requirements: OEH Code of Practice for Injured, Sick and Orphaned Protected Fauna (2011);
  • Rescue,handling & transportation;
  • Health and monitoring;
  • Common injuries & diseases;
  • Best rehabilitation husbandry practices;
  • Intensive care & facilities;
  • Assessment, stabilisation and intensive care practices;
  • Facilities; Food & nutrition;
  • Release considerations;
  • Data recording responsibilities

The second day will cover:

  • hand rearing or orphaned nestlings and fledglings including Identification;
  • Legal Requirements: Code of Practice;
  • Records: Assessment Care;
  • Rescue or Reunite considerations;
  • Assessment & Stabilisation;
  • Imprinting: (Filial Imprinting, Auditory Imprinting, Sexual Imprinting, Habitat Imprinting);
  • Basic care of precocial chicks (housing, husbandry, water, food & nutrition);
  • Basic care of altrical chicks (housing chicks & fledglings, warmth, companionship, water, diet & nutrition, feeding techniques);
  • Hand rearing diseases;
  • Release considerations
